As part of our Community Lunch and Food Relief Program, Lalor Neighbourhood House was pleased to welcome Ansam Sadik, Community Engagement Officer from Victoria Police, for an engaging community safety session.
Speaking in both Arabic and English, Ansam made sure everyone could take part, particularly newly arrived migrants and refugee families.
Her warm and approachable style created a welcoming space where people felt comfortable asking questions, sharing their experiences, and learning more about staying safe.
The session covered practical topics such as personal and family safety, what to do in an emergency, when to contact police, and how to provide information that helps officers respond effectively. Ansam also encouraged community members to request an interpreter when speaking with police, helping ensure everyone can access the support they need with confidence.
Children and families were excited to receive colouring books and emergency contact magnets, providing fun and practical ways to learn about safety and remember important emergency numbers.
One of the most valuable parts of the day was the opportunity for participants to speak with Ansam one-on-one. She took the time to answer questions, listen to concerns, and connect with community members, helping build trust and strengthen relationships between Victoria Police and our local community.
Ansam also shared plans to return for a youth focused session, where children and young people will have the chance to meet more Victoria Police officers, explore a police vehicle, and continue building positive connections with local police.
For many refugee and newly arrived families, the visit was especially meaningful. In some countries, police are not always viewed as a source of support. Meeting Ansam, who has a refugee background herself and now proudly serves with Victoria Police, offered reassurance and hope while highlighting the important role police play in keeping communities safe.
The session ended on a high note, with many families taking photos with Ansam and expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to connect. The positive feedback reflected just how valuable these conversations are in bringing people together.
