Community Kitchen Spotlight – Maureen’s MasterChef Moment

One of the highlights of our recent community gathering was a special meal prepared by our much-loved community member, Maureen.

A talented and resourceful cook, Maureen embraced the challenge of creating a delicious meal using ingredients sourced through Hala’s food rescue program. Making the most of the donated produce, she prepared a flavoursome Spanish omelette and pasta dish that was enjoyed by all.

The experience was particularly meaningful for Maureen, who used to cook in the centre’s kitchen many years ago when it was known as the Lalor Living and Learning Centre.
Returning to the kitchen brought back fond memories and provided an opportunity for her to share her skills and passion with others. It was wonderful to see her confidence shine as she took the lead in preparing the meal.

Damian stepped into the role of sous chef, assisting Maureen throughout the cooking process. Maureen’s commitment to quality was evident from the start, insisting on fresh garlic rather than the jarred variety and sending us on a mission to source the real thing.

The meal brought people together and highlighted the many benefits of community cooking. It enabled us to make use of vegetables that were nearing the end of their shelf life, reducing waste while creating something nourishing and enjoyable.

A special thank you to Sandra and Tammy for generously hosting us in the Watermelon Café space.
Our placement students, Ruth and Maddy, were able to take a well earned break from sorting food relief donations and enjoy a meal made from those same community contributions. Even our busy manager, Jo, was treated to a plate of food lovingly prepared by Maureen.

The afternoon was a wonderful reminder of how food can connect people, build confidence, share skills, and create meaningful moments within our community.
