Here’s a little update from our amazing community artist, Bushra, who shares how the mural project has become so much more than painting , its becoming a mural creating connection, joy, and a real sense of belonging within the community.

Words from Bushra

Working on the mural has become much more than an art project, it has turned into a deeply grounding and mentally enriching experience. Over the past few months, the process has created a strong sense of connection and belonging within the community.
Familiar faces now stop by regularly, not just to observe progress but to engage, share conversations, and express genuine appreciation.
This consistent social interaction helps reduce feelings of isolation and builds a sense of emotional safety and inclusion. The choice of Australian native birds and vibrant colors has brought joy, especially to children, sparking curiosity and excitement.

Their enthusiasm and the willingness of locals to pick up a brush and paint alongside me creates moments of shared creativity that are known to boost mood, increase confidence, and foster a sense of purpose. These small, spontaneous collaborations contribute to collective wellbeing.

The kindness shown by the community offering water, fruits, or simply words of encouragement reinforces a feeling of being valued and supported. Even passing drivers who honk, wave, or shout encouragement add to a sense of recognition and positive reinforcement.

These interactions, though brief, have a powerful impact on mental wellbeing by affirming connection and appreciation. Over time, I’ve started to feel like a true part of the community. Knowing people by name, recognizing their routines, and sharing stories creates meaningful relationships that strengthen social bonds.

The mural itself has become a point of emotional uplift not just for me, but for those who pass by. People choosing to take this route because it feels less “boring” reflects how art can transform everyday environments into spaces of joy and calm.

Overall, this journey highlights how creative expression in public spaces can support mental health by building connection, encouraging mindfulness, fostering belonging, and creating shared moments of happiness.
