The Lalor Refresh Project transformed a neglected laneway into a thriving community space by delivering: numerous murals, a large community garden, pergola, beautiful seats and indigenous gardens around the Lalor Neighbourhood House. Hundreds of people of all ages and backgrounds came together to co-design and build the project, fostering social connections, improving the physical environment of the neighbourhood corridor, connecting our services to the library and Lalor Shops, with an increased sense of belonging to this place.

Special thanks to Bushra Hasan who coordinated and curated the entire project, painting the main mural, the wonderful garden poles, the bubbles across the laneway. Bushra worked with Alex Kerr and Ildiko Kormanyos and numerous volunteers to complete the multicultural panels surrounding the building! Thanks too, to St Luke’s primary school students who helped develop the large mural design and painted our bollards! That was so much fun! And of course, Halime Alpogut who created all the stunning fence weaving down the laneway!

Thanks to the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions and Sustainability Victoria and the City of Whittlesea that funded these great initiatives. Now we have a federal grant from DSS, to offer mainstream opportunities for people with disabilities. Check out our Lalor Creative Hub activities here, for more information!
