July is a special month! It is the chance to learn about living with less plastic in our lives! LNH is committed to reducing plastic and promoting more sustainable lifestyles. Did you know that only 9% of plastic is recycled! Only 15% is collected and 40% of that also goes to landfill! In Lalor, too much ends up as litter washed into drains and into our waterways.

My family tried Plastic Free July years ago and we now have very little throwaway plastic in our lives! This is very important for our health and wellbeing and even for the survival of our planet! Micro-plastics are everywhere! Did you know there are over a billion micro-plastics in a single teabag! Scientists suggest we ingest up to a credit card of plastic a week! This can’t be good for us!

Here’s some simple tips to reduce plastic:

  • Use loose-leaf tea in a teapot or tea infuser to avoid ingesting micro-plastics and adding teabags to landfill. And it tastes better!
  • Use a keep cup to reduce plastic lids littered everywhere and avoid drinking the micro-plastic that line throwaway cups!
  • Carry a drink bottle and refill from the tap.
  • Take a tiffin to your favourite takeaway outlet and ask them to fill it.
  • Buy dry goods in bulk and take your own containers and bags.
  • Buy your fruit and vegetables from the local green grocer and take your own bags to pack the produce. Remembering the vegies are cheaper at our wonderful Lalor fruit shops than any supermarket!
